‘Looking for the good in others’ is probably something you were taught to do in your early education. Elementary school teachers are pros at helping children to learn to keep an open mind about others and experiences. Now, as an adult, you like the idea of it, but may have trouble applying this principle in your everyday life.

Turns out that looking for the good in people and experiences is an excellent way to turn your thoughts from the negative, into the positive, more harmonious thoughts. Remember, apply this idea to both people AND experiences.

Consider that even people that you may think of as wicked, lazy or insignificant have some good qualities and have done some good deeds.

Also, consider that even experiences that you consider time-wasters or places you would rather not be, can have some underlying good qualities.

It is generally accepted that there was never a person who did not have some good qualities or who did not do some good deeds. There was never an experience that did not have something good in it, or closely connected to it.

The search for the good, if diligent and faithful need never be in vain! When you find the good, remember to treasure that you got there. When your habit of looking for the good in others is fully established, negative thoughts will seldom intrude!

Let’s illustrate the theory of finding the good in experiences with an example.

A young woman, living on a busy Manhattan street, complained that she could not sleep because the noises of the busy city street outside her house disturbed her. A colleague of hers suggested that every noise, whatever its character, had a musical note and she should try to find that note in each of the various sounds which she heard.

She decided to give it try. She abandoned all attempts to go to sleep and pursued in finding the musical note within the city street noises. Not surprisingly, she slept soundly all night.

Why was she able to find the sound sleep that had eluded her for so long? The explanation is that before she had focused on the discordant characteristics of the noises that she heard, and by thinking these thoughts, she enlarged her consciousness of the negative, and kept herself awake.

In her search for the musical notes, she lost sight of the disturbing negative conditions, and she fell asleep because the discord of the noises no longer disturbed her. She let her mind focus and she got her desired result.

The search for the good in others and experiences, is one of the best methods for substituting negative thinking with positive, congruent thinking. A word of advice, do not limit your attempt to search for the good only ‘in the moment’. What I mean is, when you are having a negative experience or with a negative person, don’t go “oh yeah, I have to look for the good in people and experiences.”

Instead, consider looking for the good a ‘life work’, constantly in exercise to eliminate negative thoughts.

When you are able to change your thinking so that you always ‘look for the good’, you will discover that your life will shine brighter and brighter.

Not only for you – but also for others around you…family, associates, co-workers, employees and friends. The plain fact is, people gravitate towards and want to spend time with others that look for the good in people and experiences.

Perhaps you have someone in your life right now that exudes the positive thinking lifestyle. Likely, others comment on how positive they are; that no matter what, they always see the bright side. They may comment on their positive outlook and that they are pleasant to be around and that nary a negative word comes out of their mouth.

Isn’t it time that the people in your life started making statements like that when describing you?

If you pause and ponder about the good in that person or experience, I promise that you will stop that negative thought dead in its track.

Google: Yahoo! Deal Not Bad For Competition

The other day, Eric Schmidt blamed Microsoft for fanning the flames of controversy over Google’s proposed advertising deal with Yahoo!. He did also note, however, that Google had probably failed to explain the deal well enough, and that this had contributed to said controversy as well.

Well, Tim Armstrong on the Google Public Policy Blog has taken the initiative and explained a little about just what the Google-Yahoo! deal will entail. Yesterday, he answered questions about ad pricing, and today he talked about competition, which is really the heart of the controversy, and the reason why the whole deal is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Armstrong says that the deal is not bad for competition, contrary to popular belief. He compares the deal to Toyota providing hybrid technology to competitor General Motors. Yahoo! plans to reinvest the money it makes from the deal into improving its own services, and Yahoo! will still have the freedom to make similar deals with other companies, should it choose to do so.

Yahoo! will still have its own ads in addition to Google’s, but the question has come up of why anyone would want to keep advertising with Yahoo!’s service. The answer to that is Yahoo! will be dictating when it wants to use Google ads. "They have stated that their plan is [to] show them primarily on pages where few or no ads currently appear," says Armstrong. "The only way for an advertiser to guarantee placement for their ads on Yahoo! is to advertise through the Yahoo! platform itself."

Armstrong also assures everyone that Google and Yahoo! will not share personally identifiable user data, which should alleviate potential privacy concerns. As for the notion that the Google-Yahoo! deal will control 90% of the search advertising market, Armstrong says it’s "about expanding the pie, not dividing it differently."

Schmidt said at a Media roundtable the other day that Google expected all of the scrutiny the deal is attracted, and that the company was not very worried about it because they have been "playing by the rules." As of now, Google still plans to go forward with the deal next month, provided it is not blocked by the government.

There’s a deadly myth about search engine optimization and writing for the web: that good SEO and good writing don’t go together.

As a website copywriter, I hear this myth repeated back to me all the time by new clients and prospects. “Don’t bother search-engine-optimizing the content,” they say. “Just make sure it is well written and the keywords will flow naturally into the content.” Or, they repeat the words of so many self-styled gurus: “don’t write for the search engines, write for the people who will be reading what you write.”

If you’re one of the people who believe there’s a conflict of interest between search engines and humans, you’re operating under two misconceptions:

* Misconception 1: you know more about what people want to read on the web than the search engines do.

* Misconception 2: you or your writer will just naturally write the content that people or search engines want, without consciously trying to meet their demands.

Why Search Engines Know More about Your Website Visitors than You

“I want a well-written web page, not a list of keywords.” It frightens me a bit when I hear this, since it demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of what search engines do.

A search engine is not simply a massive find function, like the one in the “Edit” menu of Microsoft applications. It does not just pull up any page that has the keyword in it X number of times. If it did, all pages that show up on search engine results would simply contain a list of the keywords.

Ultimately, writing for the search engines means writing for web surfers. Think about it: services like Google thrive on giving people the pages they want to read. If they consistently failed to give people what they wanted, people would stop using them.

What Your Website’s Visitors Want to Read

Most of the time, people don’t want to read on the web. Reading on a screen hurts the eyes. It doesn’t help that a lot of web pages make it harder with text that’s too small, backgrounds that are colored rather than white, and lots of extraneous graphics.

Besides, when it comes to reading matter, there is an overabundance of choice on the web, more than any library on earth. Of that, an unfortunate amount isn’t worth reading. Time must be rationed.

In fact, people treat a web page much as a search engine does: they scan it. In particular, they scan it for the keywords they entered into the search engine. If they arrived via a link from another website, they are still looking for words and phrases related to their interest–which are generally the same as the keywords people enter into search engines.

In short, Nobel-prize-winning literature makes bad web content. You have to write specifically for the web. That’s why the web hasn’t fueled much of a resurgence in the short story or other literary writing, dashing many hopes. Ebook versions of paper books have also disappointed expectations.

Newspapers are the only paper publications that have made a smooth online transition, precisely because they are written in short, to-the-point paragraphs that are easy to scan.

Still Think Good SEO Web Content Makes for Bad Reading?

You’ve just read almost to the end of a piece of search-engine-optimized web content. This article was optimized for the keywords, “SEO,” “search engine,” “search engines,” “keyword,” “keywords,” “search engine optimization,” and “writing.”

The keywords were present in headings and throughout the content. The content itself is easy to scan: paragraphs of one-three sentences, broken up by sub-headings every four paragraphs or so.

Naturally, those keywords are too broad for this page to have a chance of ranking high in search engines for them. But this page will get some of the atypical search keywords that account for as many as half of all searches. So, if someone types in a phrase like, “keyword writing search engine optimized content,” this page would have a pretty good chance of showing up.

To be sure, this article is on the long side for a web page. Most people won’t even scan more than 600 words of text; 250-500 is ideal.

But this article is destined primarily to be shown in an email newsletter, where attention spans are longer since people are more confident the source of the content can be trusted to repay their investment of time. Besides, as a well-structured page, it can be split into two or three pages according to the subheadings.

In short, there’s much more to writing well for the web than just writing well. If you’ve had enough sense to have your web content written professionally, have enough sense to take the advice of most website copywriters: search-engine-optimization for keywords and good web writing are the same thing.

Fire erupts at Brisbane rubber factory

Firefighters have brought a large fire at a rubber factory in Brisbane’s south under control.

The fire, in Business Street, Yatala, was reported about 8.20pm (AEST) on Wednesday, police said.

It took 15 Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crews to bring it under control, The Courier-Mail reported.

Residents nearby were advised to remain indoors and all people except emergency services personnel were excluded from the immediate area to assist the firefighting effort, police said.

No one was injured in the fire.

Police will investigate the cause of the blaze.

When do you use a separation agreement? You can make use of this option if you are still unsure about getting a divorce. You would need to use a “deed of separation” to ensure that any arrangements pertaining to finances, child custody, or other plans are legally documented. The procedure for seeking separation is the same as that of divorce and the court will have the power to decide on your financial obligations. However, these financial obligations do not include pension-splitting. Therefore, if pension-splitting is your financial objective, then this might not be the correct option for you. In addition, legal separation does not allow you to remarry.
Once you have filed the petition, you have legally started the divorce process. If you are filing for the divorce, you will be called the “petitioner”, your spouse will be called the “respondent”, and any third party that may be involved will be called “co-respondent”. The court will then send the petition to your husband or wife and the co-respondent. Your spouse will have eight days to acknowledge that he or she has received the petition. If your spouse fails to do that, then the court will appoint someone to serve the petition in person.

Mediation is another alternative to avoid the hassle of going to court. Mediation is a process wherein both the partners communicate with each other to sort out their issues in front of an independent mediator. Mediation is in no way similar to marriage counselling because opting for mediation means that you and your spouse have decided on divorce. You will still need a solicitor for the proceedings because a mediator will only give you general advice and not specific personal advice. Therefore, it would be beneficial to discuss your issues with your solicitor before and during the mediation process.
